Arusha National Park is a beautiful little jewel that is often overlooked by tourists in their haste to get to the big national parks such as Serengeti National Park, or Ngorogoro Crater. However, this little place, located quite close to Arusha town, is a beautiful place that is recommended you visit.
Many monkeys hang around the entrance of the park, inviting tourists in with their playfulness – although it is advised not to get too near. Many different kinds of monkeys can be found as soon as you step into the park. Alongside monkeys, you are also able to see leopards and hyenas wandering about. Lions and elephants may be scarce, but the giraffes, zebras, and dik-diks are a sight to see! You may even run into a waterbucks or two, which is always a wonderful new animal to add to your ‘animals-to-see list’. The flock of flamingos that fly over the lake are an absolute delight to see!
Although this park is scarce of a variety of animals, it makes up for more than that by being home to Tanzania’s second highest mountain – second to Mount Kilimanjaro – Mount Meru. Standing at 4,566 meters (14,990 feet), Mount Meru is the fifth highest mountain in Africa. Only 50 km (30 miles) away from Kilimanjaro, Meru offers a beautiful view of the mountains and the views surrounding it.
Never fear, because although you don’t have a lot to see at Arusha National Parks, there is a lot to do. You can go on forest walks (that are perfectly safe), and have picnics at certain designated picnic sites. You could always accept a challenge and climb Mount Meru, which is a 3-4 day climb, simply to see the beautiful view of Mount Kilimanjaro that it holds.
