Mt. Kilimanjaro Climb – Marangu Route
The Marangu Route is the most popular of the routes to the summit of Kilimanjaro because it it possible to summit using the Marangu route in just 5 days.
The Marangu offers you the option of spending an extra acclimatization day on the mountain. This extends the route into a 6 day trek, greatly increasing your changes of success. Shared hut accommodation on the Marangu route forms one of the main difference, compared to the other routes.

THE QUICKEST CLIMB
It is possible to to summit using this route in only 5 days! Our shared hut accommodation offers you the relative luxury of being able to sleep in huts along the entire route. Mineral water, soft drinks, chocolates and beers are also sold at all the camps on this route. All your equipment and supplies are portered and a cook prepares all your meals.
THE MARANGU ROUTE OVERVIEW
ARRIVE AT HOTEL IN MARANGU
At 9am, you will be picked up from Arusha for a scenic drive to Marangu, a town located on the lower slopes of Mt. Kilimanjaro.
After lunch you will meet your guide for a briefing and also check all your climbing gear and equipment. You will also have time to discuss the climb in detail with your guide. Enjoy your dinner and take a good night rest, ready for a 6 day adventurous climb of a lifetime.
MARANGU GATE – MANDARA HUT
Hiking time: 4 hours
After breakfast, you will depart from your hotel and leave for Marangu Gate at Kilimanjaro National Park. This is where you will begin your hike and it will take you through the rain forest. You will stop halfway for lunch.
On your arrival to the Mandara Hut , around 2 or 3pm, have some coffee or tea. A late afternoon trip to Maundi Crater is a good way to acclimatize. Dinner is served in the early evening.
MANDARA HUT – HOROMBO HUT
Hiking Time: 6 hours
After breakfast you will hike to Horombo Huts. Stor halfway for lunch, where you can enjoy the amazing views of Mawenzi and the local porters will tell you the tales behind Mawenzi.
Arrive at the Horombo Huts in mid afternoon. The stunning view of the summit will take you off your feet! Prepare for dinner and relax.
Horombo Huts is a village of huts perched on a small plateau, with buildings similar to that of Mandara. You will meet both ascending and descending hikers here. This extra day and night at Horombo is for additional acclimatization. A hike to Zebra Rocks is strongly recommended. All meals provided at the hut.
HOROMBO HUTS – KIBO HUTS
Hiking Time: 7 hours
Wake to breakfast, but if you wake earlier you can get some great photos of the sunrise.
The first half of the day’s hike traverses the upper heath land while the second half crosses the vast saddle that connects Mawenzi and Kibo. The saddle is an alpine desert that resembles a lunar landscape. We stop halfway for lunch.
KIBO HUT – UHURU PEAK
Hiking Time: 7 hours
Wake at midnight to a light breakfast then prepare for your summit ascent. The goal is to climb before dawn so that you can reach Uhuru Peak near sunrise. Leave at 1 am and reach Gilman’s Point on the crater rim by 7am. Another 2 hours of hiking takes you to Uhuru Peak at about 9am!
From there you will descent all the way back to Horombo Hut.
HOROMBO HUT – MARANGU GATE
After breakfast you will descend to Mandara Hut. You will have lunch and continue on to the park gate.
You’ll be transported back to Babylon Lodge. You will be in a mood for a celebration after conquering the roof of Africa!
After breakfast, you will be dropped off either at Arusha to continue with your safari or at Kilimanjaro Int. Airport for you flight back to North America.
