Named by the natives as ‘Siringitu,’ meaning “the place where the land moves on forever,” Serengeti has come to symbolize the beauty that comes with a thriving natural environment. The Serengeti region covers 30,000 square kilometers and includes the National Park, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Maswa Game Reserve, the Loliondo, Grumeti and Ikorongo Controlled Areas and the Maasai Mara National Reserve in Kenya. The expansive protected lands cover 14 percent of Tanzania’s land area. Of this protected area, the Serengeti National Park has come to be known as one of the best safari destinations in the world.

With over 90,000 visitors each year, the Serengeti National Park is one of the most popular safari destinations in Tanzania, as well as the oldest. While it is most famous for the annual wildebeest migration, it also holds many other spectacles and treasures. The ecosystem is one of the oldest in the world, including vast forests, volcanoes, woodlands, rivers and plains, as well as the animals that inhabit them.

The annual migrations consist of over one million wildebeest and 200,000 zebras migrating south from the northern hills to the southern plains. They do this during the short trains in October and November. They then circle west and then north after the long rains in April, May and June. They leave the dry sunburnt savannah before the rains and come back to a green paradise, wildflowers blooming and the earth refreshed. It is part of the ancient rhythm that makes up the song of Africa’s long natural history. The instinctual drive to make the migration is so strong that the animals make the 600-mile trek through crocodile-infested waters and tough terrain every year, after which they replenish the population by producing more than 8,000 calves daily before making the pilgrimage again.

If you are interested in more than the large mammals of the Serengeti, the environment is also home to lizards, 100 varieties of dung beetle, as well as more than 500 bird species, including ostrich and eagles. The wildlife is expansive and varied, as is the environment. This means the Serengeti has something for everyone.

While in Serengeti, you can enjoy a hot air balloon safari, walking safari, picnicking, game drives, and rock paintings. This is the environment that birthed the evolution of man. These are the animals that our prehistoric ancestors battled on a daily basis. The Serengeti will allow you to witness nature in its truest form, as it has been for millions of years and as it will be for millions more.
