The Serengeti (derived in Maasai language) means “endless plains”. True to its name, it spans 12,000 square miles. This region is located in the north Tanzania and stretches towards the south of Kenya. The plains in Tanzania are known as the Serengeti whereas the plains in Kenya are known as Maasai Mara. The Serengeti encompasses Serengeti National Park, which is maintained by the government, and is a very popular tourist attraction because of the animals that inhabit the park. This particular park is known for being home to the Big 5 animals – the buffalo, the lion, the rhino, the leopard and the elephant.
In addition to these animals being one of the biggest attractions, the wildebeest migration is a huge tourist attraction – you will witness thousands of wildebeests migrating from one part of the Serengeti to the other and it’s a sight to see! If that isn’t enough to get you excited for an amazing day out in the wilderness, imagine a pride of lions just sitting under a tree, or a herd of elephants trying to protect their young.
